Windham woman helps promote TV series

---- — WINDHAM — The owner of a local salon will help promote a new Fox television series next week by styling women’s hair on the streets of Boston and New York City.
Luisa Garcia is hoping it will promote her Soleil Salon & Spa, too.
Garcia admits she was looking for something different from the promotional opportunities of social media when she received a call from former clients in the publicity field needing a good stylist on the East Coast.
“Everything came down the pipe. I had to ask, ‘Am I in a dream or where am I?’’’ Garcia laughed.
Where she usually is would be her business at Castle Commons on Range Road, helping the women of Windham and Salem look their best.
Where she will be Monday and Tuesday is Manhattan and Boston, locations to be determined, aboard a bus with a gimmick to promote “The Mindy Project,” a Fox comedy debuting Tuesday night.
The plan is for women to get invited into The Mindy Mobile Makeover Vehicle.
That’s where Garcia moves into action, giving them a quick, blow dry style.
“There is no cutting at all,” Garcia said.
Soleil employs 20 and relocated last spring, so Garcia knows a little bit about excitement. She is looking forward to the television styling adventure.
“I’m pretty excited to see what the challenge is,” she said.
Garcia isn’t afraid of a challenge.
Besides relocating, she introduced a blow dry bar to her salon this year.
Popular in the big cities from Montreal to Los Angeles, blow dry bars offer clients a quick style minus the cut.
“We’ve been doing it since April,” she said.
There’s a little pampering. Clients can have coffee, tea or even a glass of wine.
But it’s not that kind of a bar. Garcia said the State Liquor Commission prohibits her from selling or advertising alcohol.
“You go in, get the blow dry, you’re done and you get out,” she said.

A local spa owner has been chosen to share her talents on board a vehicle designed to promote "The Mindy Project," a new sitcom coming to FOX this fall.

Luisa Garcia, owner of Soleil Salon & Spa, is going to be the stylist on the "Mindy's Mobile Makover" vehicle, which is going to be in Boston on Sept. 25. The specific location and time that the vehicle will be in the city is still to be decided.

The vehicle will offer free blowouts and "Mindy-cures," as well as a limited edition bottle of OPI nail polish. Certified OPI nail techs will also be treating fans to a quick polish change.

The East Coast version of the fully-wrapped, custom vehicle started the tour today in Washington D.C., while a West Coast vehicle began its tour in Seattle.

Garcia getting selected to take part in the promotional stop is another positive step for the local business owner. She opened the new location for her salon in Castle Commons in May, resurrecting a business that was struggling at its location tucked away on Haverhill Road.

The new sitcom is set to premiere later in the evening after Garcia appears on the mobile salon. The show stars Mindy Kaling, who is best known for her role as Kelly Kapoor in the U.S. version of "The Office."
